Assessing Greatness in Artistic Performance

How to assess greatness and inhibitive creativity.

When we try to define those things that moved us, or had created the greatest impact on us during a performance, we are commonly speechless for find the appropriate words to describe what has just happened to us.

All we know is that we have been completely transported into another world where there was just the now and then, where we felt uplisted and disconnected from our worries. Something truly magical has occurred that is impossible to describe. It is indeed a personal experience for each one of us to feel.  A feeling is felt differently by many. It could be received on a deep level or slightly denial.

It is also true that not all artists or performance are as magical as the one that really took our breath away.

We agree that some artists have greater than others at least in their own genre. Here I am looking at artists expressing their greatness in their own style and genre.

I remembered being rendered utterly speechless with goosebumps by the ability of Clapton filling the whole space with such intensity of beautiful feelings. I could hear at that moment his soul singing. These guitar solos were so powerful and his vocals matching them. it was living right there in the moment for an eternity.

His greatest is his ability to fill the space with volume and able to decrease and increase it at will.  I am not talking about volume with a sound system but volume of the soul, of this human being.  When he is playing blues, that’s where he is. It is so powerful.

For another artist is perhaps the beauty of exquisitely crafted music and lyrics. An ability to use both making them match perfectly each other. There is so much beauty in poetry and music. it could be an actor able to deliver a line that is forever engraved in our mind.

Music is an energy. An artist commanding that energy and attention able to own it is really filling space. in fact, he owns the space and the auditorium. It is quality you are looking here.  We keep forgetting that a great artist is an individual with abilities he has developed to full fruition. He had nurtured first a desire to perform and create an otherworldly world. He gave himself a total licence to artistic creativity. It is said he has reached a plane where his creativity is uninhibited. This artist is the totality of himself as a performer.

The music was inside him and all great artists have escaped the conventional system of education. They skipped schools as schools was indeed imposing upon them rules as opposed to creativity who has no limits.

Clapton was a professional at the age of 15. McCartney, Lennon were already productive at very young age. Steve Winwood was written songs at the age of 12. It goes to show, these guys had passion and were adults and professional before their time.  in olden time, kings, rulers were ruling at the age of 15. For our artists, an ability to play or perform was already there dormant ready to be fire up. A desire to express freely their creativity.

Of course, these artists are unapologetic for being who they are. Art is a freedom to express the aesthetic vibe. To be become great, you have to have the right mindset and attitude.  Play the part, dress the part.

In this age of computers, it is important to remain connected with our humanity through the words, music and performances from many talented artists.  I like also many new artists.  My favourite music that will always moves me is the musicians’ music because you can hear them baring their soul openly.

It is important to foster these abilities when an individual is expressing them or showing great potential. He or she could be the next inspiration for many generations.

Even if an individual has no desire to perform on a great scale, it is important to keep him or her connected with this creative power where he or she can express herself freely with beauty.

Remember, it comes from a desire.
